Abstract

The possibility of enriching the sulphae content of sambhar lake bittern by treatment with gypsum has been investigated as bittern with a higher concentration of sulphate can be processed economically for the recovery of sodium sulphate. treatment of the bittetn with finely powdered gypsum (80 per cent passing through 100 B.S mesh) has been found to convert sodium carbonate in the bittern to sodium sulphate and raise the concentration of sodium sulphate from 8 to 13 per cent. on chilling the enriched bittern to 0'C., higher yields of sodium sulphate are obtained, representing about 60 per cent higher recovery over that obtained with untreated bittern.
