Abstract
The production of magnesium oxide and hydrochloric acid by the thermal decomposition of crude magnesium chloride, recovered from sea bittern, has been attempted under different conditions. in the procedure recommended,debrominated bittern is concentrated first by solar evaporation and then by forced evaporation into a liquor which on cooling sets into a cake containing 46-50 per cent magnesium chloride. the cake is then decomposed in a furnace by direct firing with an oil burner at 500-700'C. and the gaseous products cooled and condensed to give hydrochloric acid of 25 per cent concentration. the residue containing 82 per cent magnesium oxide,on washing and dehydration at 500-600'C., yields magnesium oxide of 96 per cent purity. the percentage decomposition on the basis of magnesium chloride content of the cake is about 98 per cent .recovery of hydrocthloric acid is 76-78 per cent.
