Abstract
A process has been developed for the separation of sodium chloride, sodium sulphate and sodium carbonate from the waste bittern of sambhar lake. the process consists in adjusting the concentration of the bittern suitably and treating it at 100'C., whereby burkeite, a double salt of sodium sulphate and sodium carbonate, in thrown out from the solution and is separated. the mother liquor is subjected to solar evaporation to recover good quality common salt. burkeite is processed further for the recovery of sodium sulphate and sodium carbonate by a suitable modification of the trona process.
