Abstract
One of India's most industrialized states, Gujarat is the largest producer of soda
ash manufacturing about 90% of the country’s total requirement. Generally, soda ash
effluents are characterized by an alkaline pH. This is an early attempt to study the
cultivable microbial diversity and molecular characterization of alkaliphilic bacteria,
based on 16S rRNA gene sequences isolated from the effluent and sludge samples of a
soda ash industry located on the West coast of Gujarat. The effluent and sludge samples
had a high pH ranging from 8.75 to 10.75. While their TDS and salinity ranged between
142 ppm to 54300 ppm and 0.0052% to 5.21% respectively
